The Google Business Profile Weekly Routine: 20 Minutes That Keep You in the Map Pack

Small business storefront with an open sign — the kind of local business that wins the Google map pack with a consistent profile routine

Your Google Business Profile is not a set-it-and-forget-it listing. Google’s local algorithm rewards activity — fresh posts, new photos, recent reviews, answered questions. A profile that went quiet in March loses map-pack ground to the competitor who posts every Monday, even if your reviews are better. We covered how DMV customers actually find you on Google last week; this is the maintenance SOP that keeps you there.

Total time: 20 minutes, once a week. Put it on the calendar for Monday morning, run it yourself or hand it to whoever opens the shop. No tools required beyond your phone.

Step 1 — Post one update (3 minutes)

One Google post per week is the single highest-leverage habit. Rotate four types so you never stare at a blank box: this week’s offer, a recent job or project (before/after photos crush here), a customer win (quote a 5-star review), or a seasonal reminder (“Book your fall HVAC tune-up before the September rush”). Write 2–3 sentences, add a photo, add the call-to-action button. Done.

Step 2 — Add 2–3 fresh photos (3 minutes)

Profiles with recent photos get more clicks and direction requests — and “recent” is the key word. Phone photos from real jobs beat stock every time: the crew on site, the finished work, the dish that sold out Saturday. Pro move for DMV businesses: name the file before you upload it (deck-repair-alexandria-va.jpg beats IMG_4club82.jpg).

Step 3 — Work your reviews (5 minutes)

Two motions, every week. First: reply to every new review — 5-star replies can be two sentences, but mention the service and the town (“Glad the panel upgrade in Silver Spring went smoothly”). That’s keyword relevance Google reads. Second: send review requests to last week’s happy customers while the job is still fresh. If asking feels awkward, use our 5 copy-paste review request scripts — text message version included.

Step 4 — Check the Q&A section (2 minutes)

Anyone can post a question on your profile — and anyone can answer it, including people who are wrong about your prices and hours. Scan for new questions, answer them in a sentence or two, and seed the section yourself: post the three questions you get on the phone every week and answer them officially.

Step 5 — Verify hours, services, and links (2 minutes)

Thirty-second scan: are your hours right (holiday coming up?), is the booking link working, are your services and service areas current? Nothing kills a map-pack lead faster than “Closed” showing on a day you’re open. Google also nags profiles with stale info — and suggested edits from the public can go live if you never check.

Step 6 — Read the performance tab (3 minutes)

Open Performance and note three numbers in a spreadsheet or notebook: calls, direction requests, and website clicks. That’s it. In a month you’ll see which weeks spiked and match them to what you posted. This is how you learn what your market responds to without paying for a dashboard.

Step 7 — Log it and book next week (2 minutes)

Write one line: date, what you posted, review count, the three numbers. A routine you don’t log is a routine that quietly dies in week four. If you delegate this SOP, the log is how you verify it’s actually happening.

The weekly checklist (copy this)

  • ☐ Post 1 Google update (offer / job / review quote / seasonal)
  • ☐ Upload 2–3 real photos with descriptive filenames
  • ☐ Reply to all new reviews + send requests to last week’s customers
  • ☐ Answer new Q&A, seed one FAQ
  • ☐ Verify hours, services, links
  • ☐ Log calls, directions, website clicks
  • ☐ Repeat next Monday

Twenty minutes a week is the whole price of staying visible in a market as competitive as the DMV. Most of your competitors won’t pay it.
