The 15-Minute Mid-Year Marketing Checkup: A 12-Point Checklist for DMV Small Businesses
July 3rd. The year is officially half over. Most DMV small business owners will roll into Q3 running the exact same playbook they ran in January — whether it worked or not. Don’t be most owners.
This checkup takes 15 minutes, requires nothing but your phone and your last six months of gut-level honesty, and tells you exactly where your marketing is leaking money. Grab a coffee. Set a timer. Go.
Quick disclosure: some links below are partner links — AHD may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. We only point to tools we’d hand a client.
Part 1: Can people find you? (5 minutes)
- Search your own business on your phone. Not your name — your service + your city (“HVAC repair Alexandria”). Are you in the map pack? If you’re invisible, start with our Local SEO in 2026 guide from yesterday.
- Open your Google Business Profile. When was your last post? Last photo? If the answer is “March,” Google noticed too.
- Count your 2026 reviews. Fewer than 10 new reviews since January means your ask system is broken — or doesn’t exist. Steal our copy-paste review scripts.
- Google your phone number. Does the same number and address show up everywhere — site, GBP, Yelp, Facebook? Mismatched info quietly kills local rankings.
Part 2: Does your website convert? (4 minutes)
- Load your site on your phone, on cellular. Count the seconds. Over three and you’re paying for traffic that bounces.
- Find your main call-to-action in 5 seconds. Can a stranger tell what you do, where you do it, and how to book — without scrolling? If not, revisit our websites that convert breakdown.
- Test your own contact form. Submit it. Did you get the notification? You’d be shocked how many DMV businesses have had a dead form since spring.
- Check where your leads actually come from. If you honestly don’t know whether calls come from Google, referrals, or that ad you’re still paying for, that’s fixable — a lead-tracking tool like WhatConverts ties every call and form to its source so you stop guessing.
Part 3: Does anything happen after the lead? (4 minutes)
- Audit your speed-to-lead. Pull up your last five inquiries. How long until someone responded? Over an hour and half of them already called a competitor.
- Look at your follow-up count. One reply and done? Most jobs close on touch 3–7. If follow-up lives in your head instead of a system, a simple CRM like Capsule puts every lead on a pipeline you can see.
- Check your email list. Have your past customers heard from you at all in 2026? A monthly email through something like Constant Contact is the cheapest revenue you’ll generate this year — these are people who already paid you.
- Read your last three posts (social or blog). Would a customer find them useful, or are they “we’re hiring” and a logo? Useful beats loud, every time.
Scoring your checkup
10–12 solid: You’re ahead of 90% of local businesses. Double down on what’s working.
6–9: Normal — but every gap is a lead leak. Fix the Part 1 items first; visibility feeds everything else.
5 or fewer: Your marketing isn’t underperforming, it’s unplugged. The good news: these are systems problems, and systems problems have fixes.
Don’t fix all 12. Fix three.
Pick the three items that made you wince, put them on the calendar for next week, and ignore the rest until August. Momentum beats completeness.
